Project Description: The project required the excavation and disposal of approximately 500 to 600 cubic yards of fuel-contaminated soil which was the result of a pipeline release. Field screening laboratory testing of soil samples during excavation operations ensured that contaminated material above the cleanup levels is removed. The excavated material was trucked to a thermal treatment facility operated by Anchorage Sand & Gravel, which is an approved Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) treatment and disposal facility. There, the material was thermally treated until contamination levels meet ADEC specifications for clean material. Following the completion of excavation, the site was filled and compacted with suitable back fill materials to an elevation that is slightly above the surrounding area to provide positive drainage.
